Social media is quickly becoming a valuable community service.
And it's free to access, which is even better. In case you have any doubts about
the effectiveness of your home security system, you might be relieved to know
that social media is playing a part in catching burglars. In New York, police
are actually using Facebook to catch thieves before they strike by friending
them. This practice is already common in Mexico, where residents use Twitter to
report crimes and see what's happening in their neighborhoods.

New York cops were actually able to arrest an entire gang of thieves by first getting them on friend lists, and then compiling information  received from status updates to figure out where they were going to strike next.
Of course, we're not suggesting you abandon your home security company. But it
might be time to ask if they have any upgrades to their system that you can
benefit from.
